Hygge | creating a feeling of being comfortable and empowered by your surroundings.
"How do you say your company's name?" This is a question we get asked all the time. It almost seems like a secret password. Well, it's pronounced, 'hoo-gah'. However you decide to utter this special word, it really doesn't matter, it's the meaning that makes a difference.
Chris and I are not Danish (as far as we know), but we have always admired how Denmark consistently ranks as one of the happiest countries in the world. The Danes attribute their happiness to their love for nature, riding bikes, food, close relationships, and the concept of 'hygge'.
Our first discovery of this intriguing word was how all great discoveries are made... a Pinterest search. More specifically, a desperate cry of, "How to be happy in the winter". If you live in a really cold state, you probably already know what I am talking about. So for my fellow Floridians, there are states in our country where the temperature in the winter goes below 32 degrees (in the daytime!). It snows. It gets so cold, the sun says, "Nope." and goes back into hibernation. With the lack of vitamin D, and it being freezing, it is easy for people to get the attitude of, "Well, that's how it is!" In pops this idea of 'hygge'.
Hygge is more than making yourself, and your home, cozy. It's about feeling empowered... taking a difficult situation (aka. winter) and figuring out a way to be happy with it. It's about taking control of your life. The idea of, if you don't like the way something is, then change it. The Danes overcome their long (six months), dark winter not with revolutionary, or extraordinary practices, but by keeping it simple. They buy warm coats + winter boots, get out in nature, drink + hang out with their friends/family, create a warm + cozy vibe in their home, and eat whatever the heck they want to eat.
Take the inspiration of hygge and let it empower you to be a change maker... even if it's just changing the toilet paper roll.
Forever hygge inspired + planet obsessed,
