Our Light Bulb Moment | How We Created Hyggelight - The Growing Candle™

Hi! We are Cyndi + Chris and have been madly searching for a good business idea since we first met. We tossed around many crazy ideas like owning a bike shop (we almost bought one actually), food truck, ice cream stand, network marketing, and of course, Amazon… but nothing really felt right yet. Then it happened.

It’s crazy, it was winter, and I had all these plant pots, you could say I’m a plant hoarder and decided to fill them with soy wax to try out candle making. A few days after, my best friend and I (also from Ohio) were pen-paling to keep from going insane. She knew I loved plants, sent me the cutest little seed paper card. Chris saw how excited I was over this wildflower-garden-waiting-to-happen, and that all my planting containers were now filled with wax… and that’s when the light bulb moment happened! Natural soy candles in ceramic planter pots with seed embedded labels for planting in the container once the wax was melted, our Growing Candle was conceived.

We started with the name Hyggelight Candles since the concept of hygge (hoo • ga) was keeping me alive that winter and candles are a huge part of creating a cozy atmosphere. A few weeks later we morphed it into, Hyggelight® - The Growing Candle, since ‘The Growing Candle’ described the process of our less-waste product in an easy-to-remember way.

It wasn’t until we started hearing, “You guys should be on Shark Tank!”, from every other person + their brother, that we realized how much our little company was resonating with people. Seriously, we would already be able to pay Adelyn’s way through college if we charged people a nickel (ok, maybe a dollar) every time someone recommended Shark Tank.

Now we are here! One year into our growing company, and we couldn’t be more excited to see what’s going to happen next. Thank you to everyone who has been supporting us from the beginning (the first few batches of candles didn’t look like they do now.) Your encouragement is a big part of our success so far. We wouldn’t be here without you guys. You Rock!

Be forever hygge inspired + planet obsessed,

Cyndi + Chris

  • Do you have a store front in Toledo Ohio. I live in Toledo and find it silly to ship if you have the candles in town here.
